News Letter

Special Thanks

Rev. John Steinberg, Jr., Donna Westdahl and campers at Metlakatla Youth Camp We want to give a special thank you to John and Patsy Steinberg of the Kotzebue Church of God for their invitation for Donna and I to help them at the Church of God Youth Camp out of Metlakatla, Alaska. Through their support and also of the Metlakatla Church of God we were able to travel with John and Patsy to Metlakatla and help with a week long youth camp.

It was a pleasure to minister to the youth and get to know the fine people of this village. Although youth ministry is not necessarily our first calling we do minister in this area from time-to-time and I never cease to be amazed at what God is doing. These youth are our future and God is speaking to them, moving amongst them in ways that perhaps are past what we perceive God is doing. Let's give them what God has in mind for them. There is NO LIMIT for what they can do when they step into God. They are ready, they are open. They just need somebody to tell them they can be a man or woman of God and that God believes in them. God has plans and a future for them. We may never know if a Billy Graham or Kathryn Kuhlman may arise out of this generation.

"For I know the plans I have for you, ' declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. " Jeremiah 29:11.

Norman speaking to youthWe want to give thanks also to Rev. John Steinberg, Sr. of the Metlakatla Church of God and Rev. Byron Parker of Metlakatla Assembly of God for the privilege of preaching and ministering in their respective churches. We trust God to bring fruit to his Word and people to come to Jesus as well as draw close to him seeing him work in their lives. As we travel and minister we thank God for the opportunity he's given us to be able to fulfill our heart's desire.

That desire is to minister in our villages of Alaska as well as other doors the Lord may open for us. When we see people come to the Lord, trusting him to work in their lives and step into what God has for them there are no words to describe the joy we feel knowing what was done for eternity, for Jesus.

Kotlik Ministry

At the end of January and the first part of February I traveled to Kotlik, Alaska to 511-in for Harriet Brown at the Kotlik Assembly of God church. Pastor Brown was in Anchorage for medical reasons and asked me to fill the pulpit for a period of time.

It was good to see the Kotlik church once again, I invited Lowell Sage, a youth minister &om the Kotzebue Friends Church to travel with me My purpose in taking Lowell was two-fold:

  1. The local church could see how God was using a Native Alaskan with his particular gift of ministry. This would be an encouragement to Kotlik and perhaps foster a calling for someone to answer a call to the ministry.
  2. This would be an opportunity for involvement in the development of a future leader by being used in new aspects and perspectives in ministry.

The Kotlik church enjoyed having Lowell and Lowell enjoyed them as welL And each benefitted fmm each other.

In July of 1999 the Kotzebue Friends Church received Lowell as their Senior Pastor. We rejoice with him and his punily for this new direction God has placed them in. I'm sure Lowell would appreciate your prayers for him as he begins his new year of pastorship. God bless you Lowell!

Wainwright

During the first part of May I went to Wainwright to 611 in at the Assembly of God church for two weeks. Wainwright is without a permanent pastor. There have been several here over the years for short periods of time. The church is doing excellent with their leadership. Each is sharing in their responsibilities and with the preaching and teaching of God's Word. Greg Tagarook., retired minister, does a superb job during Friday night teaching and praying services.

As is true with many of our villages there are many needs and Wainwright is no different. It was a pleasure to get to know the people, to visit in their homes and to minister as God enabled. I saw God do much healing here and he is continuing to move. It is churches like this that I remind myself that Jesus said, "...I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Matthew 16:18. Pray for a permanent pastor for Wainwright.

Togiak, Dillingham and Kalskag

On a picnic with Sergie'sAfter leaving Metlakatla we went on to Togiak for several days. We were spent a week with the Tim and Martha Sergie and family. Togiak Assembly of God is a work started by Phil and Dasie Daugherty. They did a work with which Tim and Martha are enjoying the fruits. Tim and Martha are doing a great job! There are difficulties when one ministers in his own home town or village but God IS working. While we were there Tim lead a new convert to the Lord. These are the obvious things. God is ministering often in ways we are not aware of.

Thank you Lord for the privilege of preaching your gospel. You know these people. You know their hearts. Continue to touch them. And touch through Tim and Martha. They're special! AMEN.

Dillingham

That next Wednesday we made our way to Dillingham. Pastor Ron Daley heard we were in Togiak and invited us to come to services here. We were glad to be able to. We held services Wednesday through Friday. This was our first time having services in Dillingham and was a good opportunity to get to know Ron and his wife Gertrude as well as members of the local church body.

One thing mentioned to me while we were here was, "That was what I needed to hear. " This individual was slowly drifting away from the Lord. He heard a challenging message that helped bring him into focus and closer with the Lord. Once again, this is what it is all about for us. When we know what we are to do and that it is for the Lord, it is worth it all when people come to the Lord and develop a closer walk with Jesus.

Thanks, Ron, for the invitation. We trust God for deeper &uit and God's blessings on you as you minister for Him!

Kalskag

Leaving Dillingham we made our way to Bethel to visit my sisters before traveling up to Kalskag on the Kuskokwim river. It's always good to see family.

Martin AusdahlWe enjoyed Kalskag. We were planning on ministering only on Sunday in this village. We felt this was too short a time and stayed one extra day. We're glad we did. AAer ministering a majority of his life and raising his family here Martin Ausdahl is seeing fruit with his ministry. He and his son Mark share the work and we saw the beginnings of faithfulness in their labor.

God is speaking to peoples in our villages and hungering for him, And they are coming to him. I believe he is doing more and with more evidences. Thanks Martin and Mark for allowing us to be a part of your ministry!

"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that YOUR LABOR IS NOT IN VAIN IN THE LORD!" I Corinthians 15:58

Editorial

I'm seeing the Spirit of God move in Kotzebue. I've seen his evidences in the villages I've been to throughout the last three years. And now I'm seeing it like a Rood here, And it isn't tied to one church. God is moving. He's using whoever is willing to be led by his Spirit and willing to be used.

What are the ways that I am seeing him move? People are coming to the LORD like I've never seen before. They are hungering for his Word and responding to it. They want more. They have a zeal for him and are eager to give testimony about him moving in their lives. Like Philip telling Nathaniel about Jesus, they are saying,

"Come and see!" (John 1:46).
Good things are coming out of villages of Alaska!

People are getting together. They want fellowship. They thrive on being with each other. They do a lot of singing. In villages where there is no pastor this is how they survive. They learn to pray for each other and hold each other up. They have to do it this way. It is the only way they can make it. It reminds me that we are not to

'forsake the assembling of ourselves together. " (Hebrews 10:23).
It fully says
"let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith,... Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another.. .!"(Hebrews 10:22 -25a).

Please keep the people in our villages in your prayers. They are so easy to feed. They are ready. They are hungry. They need Sheperds.

Praise the LORD, God is using new ways to reach our villages and reservations. One of these ways is by the television production WE WIN! This is an evangelism program by and for Native peoples reaching out to the WHOLE WORLD! He's using our people more and more, And he is opening doors for them to be used. Praise the LORD for what he is doing.
